Belize is located in Central America, neighboring Guatemala. The climate is subtropical, and there are (should be?) good opportunities for scuba diving year round. We flew in from New York via Houston – where you'll meet extremely long queues to get through immigration when you return to the US. Remember this when booking tickets!

We stayed on Ambergris Caye, a short flight from Belize City. If you are looking for alternative activities, Ambergris Caye probably isn't the right place to stay, as you'll only find dive operators and average to pretty poor restaurants.

The scuba diving can be good, but then you'll have to go for a trip way outside the island, as the house reef of Ambergris Caye is close to totally dead because of excess fishing and damages from passing tornados.

So, why should one go to Ambergris Caye? One good reason is a dive site called The Blue Hole – which it actually is. The Blue Hole is located in the middle of absolutely nothing, and stretches down to 45-50 meter. The bottom is packed with stalagmites, which makes the dive kind of special. NB! They've had a couple of serious accidents there, so nobody – no matter experience or level of certification – to dive without the company of one of the Dive masters. This means that you'll be diving in a group with up to 12-14 divers, and the dive easily turns in to a crowded, not that nice experience – where you mostly see other divers.

A dive or two at Lighthouse Reef is absolutely worth it; it's a beautiful wall dive, on a wall packed with colorful corals and big lobsters and crabs all over the place. The lobsters really had an attitude, and they'd definitely had close encounters with scuba divers more than once.

We did have some really nice dives both places, and can recommend dropping by

Ambergris Kaye if you happen to be in the area. Going to Belize only to scuba dive isn't worth the money spent – there aren't enough good beaches for afternoon relaxation, and way too much dead sea.
